Keep it Loose, Keep it Tight

I heard a song recently on Pandora that I really enjoyed, at least through the first chorus…then the artist started talking about a girl he used to like and the song stopped fitting what I wanted to blog about! Take a listen to the first min and 45 seconds of the song by Amos Lee called “Keep it Loose, Keep it Tight”.

It is interesting to me because I most often find that “secular” songs speak to me more about God’s message than “Christian” music.  My opinion on Christian music is that it tends to be pretty crappy and as a result I have a hard time connecting with some of the songs.  I could go into more depth on this topic but it is outside the scope of this blog.

Now I am not saying that Amos Lee is a great musician, this is the only song by him that I have heard, but the lyrics spoke to me about what has been on my mind so much lately.  Life always seems like it will be better if we just reach the other end of the rainbow.  If we just graduate from school, when we get that promotion, after we buy that new shirt.  If we can just get that next thing, our life will be awesome.  The American Dream at its finest.  The problem is, the grass is rarely greener on the other side.  In my experience when you reach for that next level, you tend to push someone else out of the way.  I complain about the rising cost of gas as I drive past the woman who sits at the bus stop every day waiting for her ride to work.  As Amos says,

But the people on the street,
Out on buses or on feet,
We all got the same blood flow.
Oh, in society,
Every dollar got a deed,
We all need a place so we can go,
And feel over the rainbow.

“We all got the same blood flow”, so it seems that we can all be a solution to someones problem.  Every person deserves certain things in life.  No matter who they are or what they have done.  So here is to keeping my hospitality loose, and my selfishness tight.

I doubt that Amos Lee had this in mind when he wrote this song, but words have a way of provoking different thoughts for different people.  What do you think?

Until next week…
Skyler
